Marchesi di Grésy Tastings, 14 - 17 December 2010

A series of food and wine tastings over three days, led by cellar master Jeff Chilcott, pairing the wines from Barbaresco winery Marchési di Gresy with both Chinese and Italian cuisine. Highlights included lunch at One Harbour Road at the Grand Hyatt, Ming Court at Langham Place and Otto e Mezzo in Alexandra House.

Wines tasted were: the oaked Langhe Grésy Chardonnay 2006, the Langhe Nebbiolo 2009 and the Marchesi di Grésy Barbaresco 'crus' of Martinenga, Camp Gros and Gaiun from the 2004 and 2000 vintages.

In conclusion the wines have a justified reputation for elegance, they have intense aromas and are very long on the palate. There are distinct differences between the 'crus' - Camp Gros more structured, 'masculine' and Gaiun silky and 'feminine'. The 2000 is mature and needs to be drunk. The 2004 from a great vintage is superb and still in its stride. The red wines paired especially well with Chinese dishes such as steam fillet of garoupa and wok fried kuobuta pork. But do not overlook the Chardonnay which is very highly regarded in Italy.

Sai Sai Club Wine Tasting, 6 November 2010

An unconventional wine tasting to say the least. Billed as an introduction to the classic wines of France, after a brief introduction participants were invited to offer their own tasting notes. This was done with vim and vigour by highly inventive teams in fancy dress.

The seven wines tasted were: Pierre Gimonnet & Fils, Brut 1er Cru Cuis, Blanc de Blancs, Champagne, NV; Ch. Bauduc, Bordeaux (white) 2009; André Dezat, Sancerre, Loire (white) 2008; Bourgogne Blanc Cuvée Oligocène, Domaine Patrick Javillier, Burgundy (white) 2007; Ch. La Chèze, Premières Côtes de Bordeaux, (red) 2005; Ch. Picque Caillou, Pessac Léognan, Bordeaux, (red) 2007; Auxey-Duresses Rouge, Domaine Matrot, Burgundy (red), 2005

Marchesi di Grésy Tastings, 25 October 2010

A lunch at Otto e Mezzo and dinner at Grissini at the Grand Hyatt to introduce the wines of Marchesi di Grésy of Barbaresco fame. Timed to coincide with the visit of Alberto di Grésy and the announcement that Wellspring Wines was appointed the sole importer in Hong Kong.

The wines enjoyed included the Langhe Sauvignon DOC 2009, the Martinenga Barbaresco DOCG 2006, and the Camp Gros Barbaresco DOCG and Gaiun Barbaresco DOCG 2004 and 2000 vintages.

Alberto provided historical and technical information about the vineyard and the winemaking. Many guests were keen fans of the nebbiolo grape so this was preaching to the converted, and many who attended the dinner were members of the Knights of Alba, Hong Kong chapter. Hopefully there will be more chances to welcome Alberto to Hong Kong and taste these marvellously refined and sophisticated wines from one of Italy's most beautiful and interesting regions.

Burgundy Tutored Tasting with Amanda Skinner, 14 October 2010

Amanda Skinner is a director of Wellspring Wines and a specialist of wines from Burgundy and Piemonte. On this occasion she gave more than 20 guests a fascinating overview of the wines from Burgundy. The white wines, made from chardonnay, and the red wines from pinot nor, are amongst the most sought after in the world but the region remains a mystery to many. As demand for these wines increases in Hong Kong it was an opportune moment to hold the tasting. Amanda shared her insights into the region gained over more than two decades in the wine business and as a result of working closely with many of the leading winemakers.

The wines tasted were: whites - Chablis, 1er Cru, Côte de Beauroy, Domaine Pommier, 2007; Bourgogne Blanc Oligocène, Domaine Patrick Javillier, 2007; Meursault 1er Cru Blagny, Domaine Matrot, 2003; reds - Bourgogne Pinot Fin, Domaine Robert Arnoux, 2007; Auxey-Duresses Rouge, Domaine Matrot, 2005; Nuit-St-Georges, 1er Cru Les Ruchots, Frédéric Magnien, 2002.

Asia Society Wine and Food Dinner, 7 June, 2010

Wellspring Wines was delighted to supply the wines and sponsor a Wine and Food pairing with Jeannie Cho Lee MW. The evening was organised by the Asia Society. Highlights from the menu at Gong Guan restaurant in Hong Kong included: jellyfish, cucumber with mustard and seasme sauce and ox tongue, minced pigeon rolls, fatty pork, and steamed garoupa.

The wines served were: Champagne Pierre Gimonnet & Fils, Brut Fleuron 1er Cru, 2004; André Dezat & Fils, Pouilly-Fumé, Loire, (white) 2008; Domaine Matrot, Meursault, Burgundy (white) 2004; Maison Champy, Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots, Burgundy (red)2002; Chandon de Briailles, Pernand Vergelesses, Ile de Vergellesses, Burgundy (red) 2005.

The champagne and  white wines were drinking particularly well and overall paired excellently with the varied array of dishes.

Jeannie Cho Lee MW spent two years travelling to 10 Asian food cities, sampling local dishes and figuring out which wines, if any, would make worthy additions. The quest to find matching wines was particularly challenging given that Asian meals have a myriad of flavours. This resulted in her book Asian Palate (see Book Reviews on this website), which looks at how wine fits into our Asian food culture.
